Competent Authority Pathway

The Competent Authority pathway is based on the principle that certain jurisdictions have processes of assessment and supervised training which are equivalent to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations and Australian systems of supervised training. The jurisdictions currently designated by the AMC are:

  • United Kingdom
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Canada
  • United States of America
  • New Zealand (NZ Rex. Graduates of NZ medical schools are not considered to be IMGs)
Eligible International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who have completed training and assessment through AMC designated Competent Authorities, and are applying for non-specialist positions, may apply for "Advanced Standing" toward the AMC certificate. If the AMC grants the Advanced Standing, the IMG is not required to sit the AMC Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) or clinical examinations, but may undertake a workplace based performance assessment whilst working under supervision.

The first step is to determine the International Medical Graduate's eligibility for Advanced Standing through the AMC's self-assessment process.

Practitioners who consider that they may be eligible under the Competent Authority Pathway should refer to one of the following:
