Registration in the Public Interest

Demonstration of procedures or participation in workshops or seminars

International Medical Graduates may be registered for the purpose of demonstration of procedures or participation in seminars or workshops.

Temporary registration may be granted according to the following provision of the Medical Practice Act 1992 (MPA): Conditional registration at the discretion of the Board may be granted as follows7(1)G Temporary Registration in the Public Interest
A person may be registered on a temporary basis if the Board is satisfied that it is in the public interest to do so.

Procedures for Application, Assessment and Registration

The Board's policy has been amended. For registration to be granted under this category, please note that:

  • The practitioner must be a qualified specialist in the field or have extensive experience in the area to be demonstrated.
  • The practitioner must be demonstrating for educative purposes an appropriate procedure in which the practitioner has particular experience and expertise.
  • The practitioner must be attending a legitimate event in a clinically suitable location under the auspices of a legitimate organisation (eg a Specialist College or Academic Department).
  • A nominated practitioner, registered in NSW, must take responsibility for the follow up care of patients involved in the demonstration. The nominated practitioner must confirm their agreement with this role.
  • The registration must be less than two weeks and for a total of no more than 4 weeks in any calendar year.

In addition the Board requires:

  • Detailed CV
  • Final Primary Source Verification Report from the Australian Medical Council. This requirement may be waived in exceptional circumstances. (This requirement will apply to all practitioners seeking registration after 1 November 2008)
  • Certificate of Good Standing from the primary jurisdiction
  • Evidence of appropriate Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • Application fee

The Board does not require:

  • English Language Proficiency testing
  • Registration fee
