Internship / AMC supervised training

INTERNSHIP

Allocation of Intern positions in New South Wales is undertaken by the Institute of Medical Education and Training. Graduates of Australian and New Zealand medical schools may apply to the Institute of Medical Education and Training for allocation of an internship position. Medical graduates of overseas universities are not eligible to undertake Internship training in New South Wales.

For further details regarding application for an allocation please contact the Institute of Medical Education and Training on (02) 9844 6562 or visit www.imet.health.nsw.gov.au

After an internship position is allocated by the Institute of Medical Education and Training the graduate may lodge an application for registration with the Board (see below for specific information regarding submission of applications). Applications will not be accepted prior to advice from the Institute of Medical Education and Training that an internship position has been allocated.

Close to the end of internship the employing hospital will issue a Certificate of Hospital Service to the Medical Board confirming that the internship has been completed satisfactorily. If a Certificate of Hospital Service is issued and /or each term is satisfactory, then General Registration will be granted.

If term reports are not satisfactory, an interview will be arranged to discuss the reports and to look at further options for training. It is desirable that difficulties are identified early in the year and presented to the Board so that an early interview can be arranged to provide timely assistance and advice.

For some interns, additional terms of supervised training will be necessary before they can General Registration can be granted.

Intern registration is initially granted for a period of 12 months only. If additional terms are required at the end of this period, registrants will have to satisfy the Board that they are progressing satisfactorily towards general registration.

Graduates of NSW Universities

Applications for internship registration from graduates of NSW Universities are accepted towards the end of each year. Arrangements for collecting these applications have been made with each University. The exact arrangements with the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney and University of New South Wales Universities are conveyed to medical students via university website/or notice board facilities during October each year. Students should review the information provided by their respective university, and are strongly encouraged to lodge applications via the university collection process. Applications will be accepted at the Board's Gladesville office only after the closing date of the university collection.

Towards the end of the year, each of the NSW universities will provide a list of graduates (or passing students) directly to the Board as soon as it becomes available. At that point, Intern registration will be completed and the relevant registration documents will be mailed to the graduate's registered address.

Interstate and New Zealand Graduates

Interstate and New Zealand graduates may apply for registration as an intern in New South Wales if they have applied for and received an allocation from the Institute of Medical Education and Training. Applications for internship will not be accepted until an allocation has been confirmed. The Board will accept applications in person at it's Gladesville Office from late October onwards. Applications will not be accepted by mail.

Important information:

Documentary evidence confirming qualification is required. This may be in the form of a degree certificate, or final official university transcript confirming qualification requirements have been met, or original letter on university letterhead confirming that the requirements for award of the qualification have been met.

To apply for registration a completed Intern Application Form and required documents must be submitted to the Board via the applicable process as described above prior to commencement of internship.

For queries regarding Intern applications, please contact the Board's Registration Department on (02) 9879 2295.

AMC GRADUATES

International Medical Graduates who have been awarded the AMC certificate are eligible for registration to undertake supervised training in a position allocated by the Institute of Medical Education and Training. Registration is specific for this purpose only, and application for registration will not be accepted until confirmation of a placement by the Institute of Medical Education and Training is received.

English Language Proficiency

The Board has agreed to the national policy regarding English language proficiency set out in the link below. Please note that following an extended transitional period, the Board has determined that no further exemptions from the policy will be considered for AMC graduates on the basis that they have at some time in the past achieved results that do not meet the current standard agreed in 2005. All new applicants for registration in this category will be required to demonstrate proficiency as per the following requirments. Requirements for Evidence of English Language Proficiency

Applicants must attend the Medical Board in person with a completed AMC Supervised Trainee Application Form and all of the other required documents.

The application must be lodged and registration granted before commencement in the allocated position. At the end of the supervised training period, the hospital will lodge term reports with the Medical Board. If all term reports are satisfactory, General Registration will be granted.

If the term reports submitted by the hospital are not satisfactory, an interview will be arranged with the applicant to discuss the reports and to look at further options for training. For some doctors, additional terms of supervised training will be necessary before they can be granted General Registration.

AMC Supervised Training registration is initially granted for a period of 12 months only. If additional terms are reqwuired at the end of this period, registrants will have to satisfy the Board that they are progressing satisfactorily towards general registration.

Waiver of Supervised Training

The period of supervised training is required to ensure doctors are able to practise competently within the Australian health care system before being granted General Registration.

If a doctor has already held temporary registration as a Postgraduate Trainee or in an Area of Need position for more than 12 months, they may apply for a waiver of the supervised training. The decision will be based on the quality of their term reports or supervisor reports during the period of their temporary registration. A waiver is not guaranteed and application for a supervised training position should still be lodged with the Institute of Medical Education and Training.

If the waiver is granted, the practitioner must inform the Institute of Medical Education and Training.

To apply for a waiver of supervised training the following must be submitted to the Board:
1. A letter requesting a waiver of the supervised training period. This letter should include a contact telephone number and email address.
2. A detailed CV including work experience in Australia.
3. Term or supervisor reports for the entire period of employment in Australia (all positions held, including any in other states).
4. A copy of the AMC Certificate (MCQ or Clinical exam, results wil not be accepted), which has been certified as a true copy. Approved certifier according to the Statutory Declaration 1959 Act (available on the Board's website at
ww.nswmb.org.au under 'Registration'>'General information for all registrants').
5. A letter from your current Director of Training summarising progress to date and recommending General Registration.
Applications must be submitted to the Board by mail.
